Hi everybody. This is Anette from norwegianclass101.com, today, we are looking at Top 10 Phrases Tourists Should Never Use.
So let’s get started.
1. Det er ekkelt! "That's disgusting!"
Well yeah, if I brought my tourist friends to a restaurant and they would go like, well, the food is disgusting, then I think I would feel a little bit embarrassed.
2. Mitt land er bedre. "My country's better."
Well you know, all countries have good sides and less good sides but you might not want to point it out too much if you think Norway is the worst ever.
3. Jeg vil heller være hjemme. "I'd rather be back home."
Well, you know, as they say, bort er bra, men hjemme er best, “away is good but home is best.”
4. Hold kjeft! "Shut up!"
Yeah, I’d be a bit careful with using this phrase but if somebody says to you, Hold kjeft, you might want to be quiet.
5. Jeg er ikke veldig interessert i din kultur. "I'm not very interested in your culture."
So, as a person living in a foreign country, I must say that I find it very important to respect the culture of the country that I am in and I think that should be a rule of thumb for people settled in Norway as well. If you want to be in Norway, then, to a certain degree, you have to respect the basic foundations of Norwegian culture.
6. Jeg liker ikke å møte nye mennesker. "I don't like meeting new people."
If you have a Norwegian friend who wants to introduce you to his or her friends or his or her family, they might get a bit discouraged if you use this phrase.
7. La oss bare spise på McDonalds. "Let's just eat at McDonald's."
Norway has one of the most expensive McDonald’s burgers in the world. So you know, it doesn’t taste good and it’s definitely not cheap. So why would you eat there in the first place.
8. Kjedelig! "Boring!"
Dette var kjedelig. “This was boring.”
Yeah, probably not something you would be happy to hear. Well, as a local trying to do their best to show you their culture and their fun attractions and stuff, I think they would be a bit discouraged again if you were to use this phrase.
9. Dette smaker forferdelig. "This tastes awful."
Well you know, Norwegian food is very plain. So, I think it’s very hard to go wrong with Norwegian food but then on the other hand, the taste might be a bit boring, kjedelig, for some of you but either way, you should probably not say that it tastes awful.
10. Jeg kommer til å tilbringe dagen på hotellet. "I'm going to spend the day in the hotel."
Well, if you are going to spend the whole day in the hotel, why did you come in the first place? You got to go out and see what there is to see and have fun.
Okay, everybody. That’s it for now. Thank you so much for watching. We’ve been going through Top 10 Phrases Tourists Should Never Use.
