Intro

Hi everybody! Anette here. Welcome to Ask a Teacher, where I’ll answer some of your most common Norwegian questions.
The Question
The question for this lesson is… When do I write capital letters and when do I write lowercase letters in Norwegian?
Explanation
Norwegian and English have many similarities, but the way we use capital and lowercase letters is a little bit different.
Let’s go over the differences so you can learn how to use capital and lowercase letters in Norwegian.
First, let’s go over the similarities. In Norwegian, just like English, we capitalize letters at the beginning of sentences, proper names, countries, and cities.
However, in Norwegian, we don’t capitalize days of the week or months. We also don’t capitalize holAnetteys, such as Easter which is påske or the names of languages such as norsk, “Norwegian,” or engelsk, “English.” In addition, nationalities are also written with lowercase letters. For example, if you want to write, “I am American,” in Norwegian, it would be, Jeg er amerikansk.
Another good tip to remember is that only the first letter of the titles of books, songs and movies are capitalized, unless the name is a proper noun such as “Harry Potter.”
