Intro

Hi everybody! Anette here. Welcome to Ask a Teacher, where I’ll answer some of your most common Norwegian questions.
The Question
The question for this lesson is… What’s the difference between her and hit?
Explanation
This is a good question. It can be quite tricky for beginners to know the difference between her and hit, as they both translate to “here” in English. Let’s go over the differences.
Literally, her means “here” and hit means “to here.” So, the distinction is made between being at a place, her and moving towards a place, hit.
Let’s do some examples so you can learn how to use her and hit correctly.
Let’s use the sentence, Her er boka meaning “Here is the book.” In this sentence, the book is already at a place that’s close to you, so we use the word her.
In the sentence Kan du komme hit? Meaning “Can you come here?” The person is not “here” yet, but will come, literally, “to here.” So, in this case, you’ll use hit.
You’ll also see this difference with two similar words, der and dit, which both mean “there.” Using a similar pattern, let’s do two examples.
Der er skolen, “There is the school,” means the school is located at a certain place, so we use der. In the sentence, Gå dit, “Go over there,” that person is moving to “there,” so we use dit.
