Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Norway Series at NorwegianClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Norwegian holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 12 Summer holidays. In Norwegian, it’s called sommerferie. |
If there is one vacation people look forward to the most, it’s undoubtedly summer break. Most Norwegian children are on summer break from the end of June until August. Working adults are usually off during the month of July. |
In this lesson, you will learn about how Norwegians spend their summer break. |
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question- |
Can you guess what Norwegians love to eat in the summer? |
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening. |
If you are in Norway during the summer, you will likely see boats swarm along the coastline or kysten. Norwegians love the ocean and will often go on boat trips out to the many islands just off the coast. Here they relax, tan, bathe, fish for crabs, and barbecue. As the evening gets closer, you can spend the night in a tent or in the boat instead of going home. |
For those who do not live close to the water, summer days may be spent in the various parks in bigger cities. It’s common to see friends and families tanning in bikinis, and playing frisbee and soccer. |
During summer break, many music festivals kick off around the country. Festivals are popular for both young people and adults. Norwegians enjoy beer, which in Norwegian is called øl, in the sun while listening to the music. Even if it rains, people don't lose their festive mood. Instead, they pull on rain ponchos and the popular sydvest, or rain cap. |
Now it's time to answer our quiz question- |
Can you guess what Norwegians love to eat in the summer? |
The answer is strawberries. In the summer everybody eats Norwegian strawberries for dessert. Norwegian strawberries are known for being sweet and rich in taste. The most common thing is to eat strawberries with cream and sugar sprinkled on them. |
What did you think of this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting? |
