Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Norway Series at NorwegianClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Norwegian holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 21 Norwegian Wood. In Norwegian, it’s called Norwegian Wood.
Norwegians look forward to summer break mainly because of the festivals. One famous music festival that’s particularly associated with summer is Norwegian Wood.
In this lesson we will learn about the popular festival called Norwegian Wood.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
In 2004 David Bowie played at Norwegian Wood. Can you guess what happened to him on this day?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Norwegian Wood is a widely acclaimed music festival, in Norwegian musikkfestival, which is held in the city of Oslo every year. The very first Norwegian Wood Festival was held in 1992, climaxing with the world-famous Johnny Cash taking the stage at dusk.
In 1994 the festival moved to the Frognerbadet in the center of Oslo, and since then it has been held there every year. The festival kicks off in the middle of June and lasts for four days, full of people from morning to evening. It’s a popular tradition to have a picnic, in Norwegian piknik, or barbecue, or in Norwegian grilling, and lie in the summer sun with a cold beer and listen to great music.
Norwegian Wood also has a collaboration with the Norwegian radio channel NRK P3 Urørt, in which Urørt holds competitions and picks up-and-coming artists who get the opportunity to perform. It’s very popular amongst the bands and the audience. The bands, or bandene, get more exposure and the audience gets to listen to something new!
Norwegian Wood has a long list of famous artists who have performed at the festival over the years, including Bob Dylan, Simple Minds, and System of A Down, just to name a few.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
In 2004 Davie Bowie performed at Norwegian Wood. Can you guess what happened to him on this day?
At the end of the concert, a lollipop, or in Norwegian kjærlighet på pinne, was thrown at the stage hitting Bowie in the eye. At first he was naturally very upset. Many people thought he would walk off the stage, but instead he punished the audience with an additional thirty-minute penalty concert.
So listeners, what did you think of this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
Would you like to go to Norwegian Wood?
