| The Announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize occurs in Norway, and there’s always a lot of excitement connected to the revelation of the winner. |

| The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize is held around October 10 each year at the Nobel Institute in the capital of Oslo. Journalists, or journalister, from many different countries gather in the hall and eagerly await the announcement. It’s also in this hall that the winner of the Peace Prize, in Norwegian the fredsprisen, will hold his or her press conference the following December. |
| Everyone in the hall in the Nobel Institute watches the door and waits for the leader of the Nobel Committee to arrive. After the leader has announced the winner, or vinneren, of the “world’s most honorable award,” he states the committee’s reasoning, in both Norwegian and English. In the end, the audience may ask questions and the event is of course broadcast on live television. |
| Alfred Nobel, the namesake of the Nobel Institute, was born in Sweden, and is famous for further developing explosives, or sprengstoffer. These explosives became very popular and made Nobel very rich. When he died, he bequeathed most of his fortune to a fund used to award five different prizes to people and organizations that make a remarkable impact on mankind, thus creating the Nobel prizes. |
| In regards to the announcement of the prizes, Alfred Nobel was very determined that particularly the Peace Prize be handed out in Norway. Nobody knows for sure why this was the case. Some believe it is because Norway was in a union with Sweden, and that Nobel felt it was fair that Norway, considered by some to be Sweden’s little brother, awarded the Nobel Prize. |

| It was the Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland who designed the medal, in collaboration with the Swedish engraver Erik Lindberg. The winner of the Peace Prize receives a diploma and an amount of money in addition to this medal. |
