Lesson Transcript

Hei, jeg heter Nora. Hi everybody! I’m Nora.
Welcome to NorwegianClass101.com’s “Norsk på 3 minutter”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Norwegian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use Norwegian adjectives.
In this lesson we will start a series dedicated to the most common Norwegian verbs, the ones you will certainly hear all the time!
The first verb in our series will be å skulle, which means a lot of things, but for this lesson it means "to go".
So imagine someone asks you Hvor skal du i ferien? That means "Where are you going for your holidays?"
So if you are going to a ski resort for example you will say in Norwegian Jeg skal på fjellet. [slowly] Jeg skal på fjellet.
So let’s break down this answer.
First we had-
Jeg skal which is "I am going to..."
It is the present tense form of the verb å skulle, "to go".
After it came på which means “on” in Norwegian, but it’s used more like "to" in English.
Finally we had fjellet which is a noun that means “mountain”.
So now, let’s have an explanation of these connecting words between Jeg skal "I go" and your destination. It largely depends on where you are going. Words like fjellet “mountain,” landet “countryside,” stranda “beach” all paint a *general* picture of the place you are going to and we use på for those. For most other more specific destinations we use til, instead of på.
So if you are going to Oslo for example. You’ll say Jeg skal til Oslo
[slowly] Jeg skal til Oslo.
Finally, if you are going to an event like a wedding, you will use i which translates as “in.” So let’s see how you would use this. Jeg skal i bryllupp.
[slowly] Jeg skal i bryllupp
Here bryllupp means “wedding.”
Now it’s time for Nora’s Insights.
In Norwegian if you want to ask where you and your friends are going, you should use the Norwegian word for “we” -- vi. Just substitute du with vi.
Hvor skal vi? “where are we going?”
The answer could be-
Vi skal til badebassenget which is “We are going to the pool.”
You could also ask like this-
Skal vi til badebassenget? meaning “Are we going to the pool?”
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb å skulle and to use the correct linking words with it to talk about your destination.
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, å gjøre.
Do you know what this verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Norsk på 3 minutter lesson.
Sees!
