Eric: Top 25 Norwegian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 11 “How old are you?” in Norwegian. (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Norwegian learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How old are you?” In Norwegian, this is

Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Ida: hvor
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is

Ida: (Slow, by syllable) gammel

Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How old are you?”
Ida: Jeg er atten år.
Eric: "I'm eighteen years old.” Listen again as the phrase is repeated slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Ida: (Slow) Jeg er atten år.
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Ida: jeg
Eric: meaning “I.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) jeg
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: jeg
{Pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: er
Eric: meaning “am” in English.
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) er
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: er
{Pause}
Eric: And next we have
Ida: atten
Eric: meaning “eighteen.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) atten
Eric:Now repeat.
Ida: atten
{Pause}
Eric: And after that,
Ida: år

Eric: For a different answer, replace “eighteen” with “twenty years old.”
Ida: tjue år
Eric: “Twenty years old”
Ida: (slow) tjue år (regular) tjue år
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “twenty years old.”
Ida: Jeg er tjue år.
Eric: It’s almost the same; simply replace “eighteen” with “twenty.” Say “I'm twenty years old.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg er tjue år.
Eric: For more practice, replace “twenty years old” with “eight years old.”
Ida: åtte år
Eric: “eight years old”
Ida: (slow) åtte år (regular) åtte år
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “eight years old.”
Ida: Jeg er åtte år.

Eric: Now let’s replace “eight years old” with “forty-five years old.”
Ida: førtifem år
Eric: “forty-five years old”
Ida: (slow) førtifem år (regular) førtifem år
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “forty-five years old.”
Ida: Jeg er førtifem år.
Eric: It mostly stays the same, simply replace “eight” with “forty-five.” Say “I'm forty-five years old.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg er førtifem år.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Norway and someone asks you how old you are. You’re eighteen. What do you say?
Ida: Hvor gammel er du? (five seconds) Jeg er atten år.
Eric: Imagine you’re twenty years old. Respond to the question.
Ida: Hvor gammel er du? (five seconds) Jeg er tjue år.

Ida: Hvor gammel er du? (five seconds) Jeg er åtte år.

Ida: Hvor gammel er du? (five seconds) Jeg er førtifem år.
Eric: Now, you want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Ida: Hvor gammel er du?
{pause}
