Eric: Top 25 Norwegian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 14 “How tall are you?” in Norwegian (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Norwegian learners, and then learn how to answer like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How tall are you?” In Norwegian this is
Ida: Hvor høy er du?
Eric: The first word in the question is
Ida: hvor
Eric: meaning “how” in English.
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) hvor
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Ida: hvor
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Ida: høy
Eric: meaning “high” or in this case, “tall.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) høy
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: høy
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Ida: Hvor høy
{pause}
Eric: And after that
Ida: er
Eric: meaning “are.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) er
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: er
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Ida: hvor høy er
{pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: du
Eric: meaning “you.”

Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question “How tall are you?”
Ida: Jeg er 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeter høy.
Eric: "I'm 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeters tall.” You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Ida: (Slow) Jeg er 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeter høy.
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Ida: jeg
Eric: meaning “I.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) jeg
Eric: Now repeat
Ida: jeg
{Pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: er
Eric: in this case, meaning “am.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) er
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: er
{Pause}
Eric: Next is
Ida: 180 [hundreogåtti]
Eric: meaning “180 [hundreogåtti].”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) 180 [hundreogåtti]
Eric:Now repeat.
Ida: 180 [hundreogåtti]

{Pause}Eric: Listen to the speaker say “I'm 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeters tall” and then repeat.
Ida: Jeg er 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeter høy.
{pause}Eric: To make another phrase, replace “180 [hundreogåtti]” with “160 [hundreogseksti].”
Ida: 160 [hundreogseksti]
Eric: “160 [hundreogseksti]”
Ida: (slow) 160 [hundreogseksti] (regular) 160 [hundreogseksti]
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “160 [hundreogseksti].”
Ida: Jeg er 160 [hundreogseksti] centimeter høy.
Eric: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “180 [hundreogåtti]” with “160 [hundreogseksti].” Now say, “I'm 160 [hundreogseksti] centimeters tall.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg er 160 [hundreogseksti] centimeter høy.
Eric: For more practice, replace “160 [hundreogseksti]” with “175 [hundreogsyttifem].”
Ida: 175 [hundreogsyttifem]
Eric: “175 [hundreogsyttifem]”
Ida: (slow) 175 [hundreogsyttifem] (regular) 175 [hundreogsyttifem]
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “175 [hundreogsyttifem].”
Ida: Jeg er 175 [hundreogsyttifem] centimeter høy.
Eric: It’s almost the same, just replace “160 [hundreogseksti]” with “175 [hundreogsyttifem].” Now say, “I'm 175 [hundreogsyttifem] centimeters tall.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg er 175 [hundreogsyttifem] centimeter høy.
Eric: For a different answer, replace “175 [hundreogsyttifem]” with “190 [hundreognitti].”
Ida: 190 [hundreognitti]
Eric: “190 [hundreognitti]”
Ida: (slow) 190 [hundreognitti] (regular) 190 [hundreognitti]
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “190 [hundreognitti].”
Ida: Jeg er 190 [hundreognitti] centimeter høy.
Eric: Here we just replace 175 [hundreogsyttifem] with 190 [hundreognitti]. Let’s practice. Say “I'm 190 [hundreognitti] centimeters tall.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg er 190 [hundreognitti] centimeter høy.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you’re visiting Norway and someone asks you how tall you are. You’re 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeters tall. What do you say?
Ida: Hvor høy er du? (five seconds) Jeg er 180 [hundreogåtti] centimeter høy.
Eric: Imagine you’re 160 [hundreogseksti] centimeters tall. Respond to the question.
Ida: Hvor høy er du? (five seconds) Jeg er 160 [hundreogseksti] centimeter høy.

Ida: Hvor høy er du? (five seconds) Jeg er 175 [hundreogsyttifem] centimeter høy.
Eric: Imagine you're 190 [hundreognitti] centimeters tall. How would you answer?
